EN 520 board types explained

What do EN 520 Type A, D, E, F, H, I, P and R mean?

EN 520 classifies plasterboard by type letter — Type A is standard wallboard; D is controlled higher density (acoustic), F improved fire performance, H moisture resistance. Processed boards with a backing (e.g. Duplex vapour-control) fall under EN 14190 instead. Matching the classification matters for a like-for-like substitution.

EN 520 is the harmonised European standard — “Gypsum plasterboards: definitions, requirements and test methods” — that paper-faced plasterboard is CE/UKCA marked against in the UK. The type letters on a data sheet are not marketing names: each one points to a defined property measured by a defined test, which is exactly why they are the currency of a like-for-like substitution.

The type letters, one by one

Each letter marks a property the board has been shown to meet. A board can carry several at once, and most performance boards do.

  • Type A — standard wallboard. The general-purpose board for lined walls and ceilings in dry areas.
  • Type D — controlled, higher density. Density is the trade’s mass signal, so denser boards do more acoustic and, combined with other types, fire work.
  • Type E — gypsum sheathing board, made for use as external sheathing behind cladding and rainscreens.
  • Type F — improved core cohesion at high temperature. Glass-fibre and additives hold the core together as it is heated, which is the board’s contribution to a fire-rated system.
  • Type H — reduced water absorption (classes H1, H2, H3). Water-repellent additives in the core for intermittent humidity; H1 is the strongest claim.
  • Type I — enhanced surface hardness, i.e. impact resistance, for circulation and high-traffic areas such as schools and hospitals.
  • Type P — a plaster baseboard, whose face is made to receive a coat of gypsum plaster rather than direct decoration.
  • Type R — enhanced strength in both directions, for spans and situations that ask more of the board mechanically.

Processed boards with an added backing — for example a foil-laminated vapour-control (Duplex) board — sit under EN 14190 instead of, or alongside, EN 520; glass-mat wet-area boards are marked to EN 15283-1. The marked standard is what a specification should be read against.

Reading a multi-type declaration

A single string like “EN 520 Type D, F & H1” describes one board that is higher-density, fire-improved and moisture-resistant at the same time. The order the letters appear in follows the manufacturer’s own data sheet, not a fixed hierarchy.

Labelling conventions vary, and this trips people up. Some manufacturers print baseline Type A in every declaration; others print only the types beyond A. So two genuinely equivalent boards can carry different-looking strings — one reading “A, D, F & I” and another “D, F & I” for the same real performance. Neutralising that baseline is part of judging a like-for-like swap, not evidence the boards differ.

Why the classification decides a substitution

When a specification says “or equivalent”, the defensible reading is a board that meets every type the specified board declares, in the same dimensions, and adds nothing that changes its identity. A moisture class may be matched or bettered (H1 covers a spec asking for H2), but a plaster baseboard, a foil-backed vapour board and a glass-mat board are different products, never silent upgrades for one another.

Frequently asked questions

Is EN 520 Type D the same as an acoustic board?
Type D means a controlled, higher density — and density is the property that does acoustic work, so acoustic boards are Type D. But Type D also appears on dense fire and shaft boards, so “Type D” means dense, not necessarily marketed-as-acoustic.
Why do two equivalent boards show different type letters?
Usually just a labelling difference: one manufacturer prints baseline Type A in the string and another omits it. “A, D & F” and “D & F” can describe the same real performance once the baseline A is neutralised.
What is the difference between EN 520 and EN 14190?
EN 520 covers paper-faced gypsum plasterboard. EN 14190 covers processed boards that have been given an added backing or treatment — a foil vapour-control laminate, for instance. A board can reference both.
Does matching the EN 520 type make a board a valid substitute in a fire-rated wall?
Not on its own. The type letter is a board property; a fire-rated wall’s performance in minutes belongs to the tested system. Matching the classification is necessary but not sufficient — the system’s test evidence still governs.
